Bonifacio, Natale and Giovanni Guerra: The erection of the obelisk south from St. Peter's – Plate 2, Year 1586.
In 1586, Pope Sixtus V commissioned to his architect Domenico Fontana the project of the erection of the 25 meter high ancient obelisk south of the new St. Peter. This second large-sized sheet illustrates the wooden structures that were used to transport the standing or lying and again righted Obelisk to his new site, which is shown on the left and right edges of the print. Series of 2 engravings, each composed of 3 paper panels, for a total sheet size of 115 x 52 cm. Very few copies of this extremely rare series are known: two copies of the second sheet can be found in the British Museum.
