In 1586, Pope Sixtus V commissioned to his architect Domenico Fontana the project of the erection of the 25 meter high ancient obelisk south of the new St. Peter. The first panel shows St. Peter's square with hundreds of men, horses and winches, which were used in the erection of the obelisk (there were about 900 men, 75 horses and 47 winches). Series of 2 engravings, each composed of 3 paper panels, for a total sheet size of 115 x 52 cm. Very few copies of this extremely rare series are known.
